The Elector of The Palatinate, Charles II, has died. His closest living relative is one Elizabeth Charlotte. Although forbidden from succession by German law, there are enough legal uncertainties allowing Elizabeth's allies to create strong arguments for her accession. One such ally is her father-in-law Louis XIV of France, The Sun King, who is pressing her claim strongly.
Leopold I can choose to amend the law allowing Elizabeth to become the Elector, however this will bring the provinces of Berg and Pfalz under significant French influence. Alternatively, he can try to find a different candidate and press the opposing claim risking tensions with France. Until the crisis is resolved, Berg and Pfalz will be in an interregnum and cannot provide troops to Leopold's allied armies.

"It had come to the attention of the Dutch Republic that there is in fact another perhaps more justified heir to the Palatinate. Her name is Sophia of Hanover, she is daughter of Elizabeth Stuart of England and grand daughter of James I of England. her claim comes from the fact that her father was Frederick V Elector of the Palatinate of which her Brother was Prince Rupert of the Rhine. as she was the daughter of the former Elector and she does not hold any foreign fiefs she is not disqualified under German law and her ascension would be legitimate. Surely this means in the Eyes of the Dutch Republic and in effect the minds of any sane and righteous man that Sophia should be first regarded as a successor to Charles II. Good day!" Will

"The position of the Kingdom of France, Most Holy and Catholic, is known; Elizabeth Charlotte, Duchess of Orleans, a most pious servant of our father the Lord God. France wishes that the Dutch do not suffer unduly for want of a king and offers remedy should the Dutch interfere in affairs above their station. Let the Republic be warned that Our terms toward her have been stated hospitably and were scorned with neglect of reply."

The Pope sends out a letter to Leopold I, detailing his support for Elizabeth Charlotte. That Elizabeth is a good Christian should be evident from her deeds. The Pope also notes that if God had willed her not become elector, he would have provided a proper male heir for Charles II.

Not wanting to miss the party, one of the Sultan's dragomans tries his hand at western dynastic diplomacy, declaring in a letter, written in Latin and French, that the true heir to Emirate of Pfalz is a man named Mustafa Osmanoglu, whose father Mehmed 'is my employer'. The letter continues by stating that there is an almost certain genealogical claim as Mustafa Osmanoglu is a direct descendant of Charlemagne, from whose dynasty the powers and lands of the Electoral Palatinate were granted and descend.
If more genealogical evidence is required, the anonymous Dragoman says he is sure he can find it as "the Osmanoglu family have had so many noble wives of great houses, and for so many centuries, that it is hard to believe that the young Mustafa lacks a claim on any of the chief crowns and duchies of Christendom."
The employer is, quite obviously, the Sultan. It seems the letter is as much a joke as a stab in the dark, attempting to mock European bickering over distant blood claims by showing that, almost in parody, the Grand Turk himself, the arch-villain of popular sentiment, is descended from the founder of the Holy Roman Empire, as well as descended from the last Roman Emperors to rule in Constantinople. This last fact would be widely known to all the Sultan's servants, as it is a cause of great animosity between the Sultan, as the true Emperor of Rome, and the 'pretenders' of the Habsburg dynasty.

OoC: I would inform you that the Turkish word for King, "Kral", is derived from their ancestors' illiterate and idiot mispronunciation of Charlemagne. Check your privilege there, Sublime Potty.

Russian dignitaries have declared in favour of Sophia of Hanover, daughter of Elizabeth Stuart of England and grand daughter of James I of England. Her claim comes from the fact that her father was Frederick V Elector of the Palatinate of which her Brother was Prince Rupert of the Rhine. As she was the daughter of the former Elector and she holds no foreign fiefs she is not disqualified under German law and her ascension would be legitimate.
Russia believes that Sophia as Elector would create a greater balance within the HRE and allow for increased religious tolerance.

After much deliberation, the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire has made a final decision regarding the succession crisis of the Palatinate. The Emperor himself shall take personal leadership of the Palatinate, with immediate effect. German law will not be changed for this crisis or any other that may follow. Vienna would like to make it clear that it does not recognise the claims of Elizabeth Charlotte, Duchess of Orleans or those of Sophia of Hanover. This crisis and the 'Rhine question' end today, there can be no further negation over the matter. In the name of the Holy Roman Empire the Emperor would like to make it clear that he has no more territorial ambitions in Europe. Let us now work towards a great era of peace and prosperity, one that history shall remember for years to come.

The Pope expresses his disapointment during a council session, but is otherwise satisfied the matter is resolved.
