As inspectors and surveyors make the rounds of the embryonic fort, and workers trudge through wet soil to build foundations and sculpt the terrain, a strange noise is heard in the distance. The sound of foreign instruments and discordant tones. As the noise gets closer, the deep rumble of a thousand gruff voices can be heard in a solemn chant. Zahit bizi tan eyeleme. The sound gets closer, and before long streams of red, with snow-capped peaks, can be seen menacing their way towards the ‘fort’. Lines of men array, and field cannons deploy on what high ground they can find, all pointed at the fort. Any cowards that try to flee find themselves trapped between the thundering of hooves and the shot of the Janissaries. The Ottoman cavalry lie in wait, ready to capture or kill any who try to escape the fort. The engineers are a treasure prized very highly by the Sultan and his commander, Koprullu Numan Pasha. When the fort is taken, whatever already stands is pulled down, and once the workers barracks have been scoured for loot or cowering men, the entire site is given over to flame.
“Such is the fate of all who presume to challenge the House of Osman,” mutters the Sultan as he watches the flames engulf the petty scaffolds and landscaping moulds of the Kral of Vienna. “Did they really think a fort so close to Belgrad would ever be safe from the fires of Jahannam? (hell)”
The Agha of the Janissaries nodded in silent approval, before silently whispering “Mashallah” towards the heaven for this easy first milestone.
