The Ottomans have had some fine cartographers, including the eminent Piri Reis, but this tradition has declined of late. The Sultan, being fond of maps, has declared that the state shall sponsor the work of promising artists, explorers and cartographers to compile maps to aid in the management of empire.

On the whole, the Sultan was happy with this new image of his world. There were a few unwelcomed grey tendrils in the West, but it could have been worse. The new northward expansion of his empire pleased him greatly, particularly now that he had been firmly convinced that the Russian Tsar was not only another upstart claimant to the legacy of Rome, but a sovereign with no respect for the Ottoman empire, its territory, its allies, the Islamic ummah to which it belonged or its subjects. The plight of the Circassians had a become somewhat of a beacon for the faithful, demonstrating the cruelty of the Russians and reinforcing the need to deliver justice on the butchers of Sochi.
Turkish shadow puppet theatres have begun to incorporate a cruel Russian character called Boris the Butcher, who is determined to turn the plucky young Abaza into sausages, but ends up frequently grinding his own limbs or his bumbling assistant, Peter, instead.
