With the situation on the ground changing rapidly, the King-Elector has altered his plans significantly and moves rapidly to the defence of Warsaw, the expected target of the Swedish...
The Defence of Warsaw
Objective:
To prevent the Swedish from capturing Warsaw. To cement Augustine authority in Poland. To provide a position from which to counter-attack the Swedes when they are at their most stretched.
Forces:
Army of the Saxons (August II) - en route to Warsaw
Army of Poland (Chometowski) - en route to Bialystok
Royal Army (Sieniawski) - fortifying Warsaw and environs
Orders:
Army of the Saxons - march with haste to Warsaw. Maintain lines of communication with Saxony. Prepare for the defence of the city (support Royal Army is preparing defences)
Army of Poland - take up position outside Bialystok, on the crossing of the Biala river. Contest that crossing with the Swedish. Objective is to slow Swedish advance by forcing the Swedes to either a) assault the crossing taking disproportionate losses; or b) divert up river to find another crossing. When Swedes have affected their crossing, to withdraw to Wyszkow to contest the crossing of the Bug in the same way. Once that crossing has been achieved, the army will withdraw to Warsaw, to take part in the defence/counter-attack)
Royal Army - prepare defences around Warsaw (see plan to be attached). Bastions and earthworks to be prepared north of Warsaw around the fordable portion of the Vistula at Jablonna. Positions to be prepared around Praga. Positions to be prepared south of the Royal Baths, in case elements attempt to cross further up river.
Further Comments:
-Army of Poland is vastly inferior to Swedish force in all ways except for cavalry, Chometowski under strict instruction to avoid decisive battle, hence orders to defend specific chokepoints
-Without control of Gdansk, Swedish supplies will have to pass through controlled territory in Lithuania which will be highly vulnerable to the reforming Army of Lithuania, hence Swedish force is expected to act highly aggressively
-Precise Order of Battle and orders for defence of Warsaw will be prepared once picture makes itself clearer (especially plans for a proposed counter-attack)
-Even with vast numerical superiority of combined force, it will be necessary first to blunt Swedish morale before striking back, hence plans for a defence in depth of the city to drain and exhaust the Swedish force before counter attacking
All is subject to change as the situation on the ground changes
