After long deliberation, Leopold I, forever August, Holy Roman Emperor etc. etc. has accepted the suggestion by Peter II to marry his daughter, Maria Anna of Austria, to Peter II's son, John V of Portugal. We hope that Peter II will be pleased with the decision made today by the Emperor. The Archduchess of Austria (Peter II's sister-in-law) is also extremely pleased by Peter II's suggestion - a way to further strengthen the relationship between House of Braganza, House Habsburg and House Wittelsbach (The Palatinate branch)
Let us please work out the small and highly important details (both sovereigns need to approve and bless the marriage). Furthermore, this wedding is not to happen now, but when John V comes of age (1708-1709), as we believe Peter II intended
Signed, The Austrian Foreign Ambassador to Portugal.

A Portuguese official responds, stating that the words of the Emperor have give the King much to consider. Although in times of healthy diplomacy the King would accept instantly, the rapidly developing succession crisis in Spain has placed him in a difficult position.

The King of Portugal can take as long as he wishes. Our acceptance of the offer still stands.
