This war has been brewing ever since the late King Carlos II inherited his father's throne. Archduke Charles of Austria, son of Leopold I of the Holy Roman Empire has a rival claim to the Spanish Throne. Rather than claim it outright (as such a thing would be hard to achieve) Austria instead fights for a division of Spain along the old Crowns of Aragon and Castille. Aragon, with it's Italian territories will go to Austria, and Philip V would keep the Crown of Castille. The Empire would also be divided. However, if the war goes well Charles might weel be able to take control of an intact Spanish Empire.
Belligerents:
Aggressor goals: Occupy and hold Catalonia, Spanish Netherlands, Spanish Lombardy, Naples and Sicily. (Secondary goals: Keep Archduke Charles alive, occupy Madrid).

1701
Philip V, grandson of the French King Louis XIV, accepts the crown of Spain and begins exercising monarchical power. This is disputed by Emperor Leopold I (whose son Archduke Charles also has a claim), who calls in its allies and attacks Spanish territory in Italy. He assembles the Grand Alliance with William of Orange, who also fears and expansion of French power.
An Imperial army, led by Prince Eugene of Savoy has begun occupation of Spanish Lombardy.
France occupies fortified locations in the Spanish Netherlands with the help of Elector Maximilian of Bavaria (the governor-general) and with the permission of the Spanish Crown.

Would just like to inform people that Savoy has been invited to join the war on the part of the Bourbon Coalition and has accepted.
