Mercenaries:
Mercenaries have their appeal. They have their own abilities and do not come from your population pool, therefore, casualties in battle will not be deducted from your population total. They also require no time to train and recruit, being added to your forces immediately. However, these units are more expensive than other soldiers.
Religiously based mercenary units:
These are units that are available to those of certain faiths, fighting for their god and, more importantly, gold. Note, that you only purchase 3 religiously based mercenary units a year, to account for the population bases of the places you are buying them from.
Protestant mercenary units:
Hessian infantry:
Cost: 10,000 ducats
A blanket term for soldiers from small German states who make a business of selling their regiments to the highest bidder. Not only are these soldiers powerful line infantrymen, but they are also well versed in the realms of irregular warfare and aiding the civil authorities in tax collection.
Power Rating: 6+1 ambush bonus
Abilities and attributes:
Can ambush
Domestic occupation
Catholic mercenary units:
Swiss Infantry:
Cost: 11,000 ducats
The elite core of the Papal army, there are regiments who are willing to sell their services for the advancement of their faith. They are currently in a period of transition from their legendary role as pikeman, to elite line infantry. Thus, they continue to have detachments of pike men who fight alongside their new flintlock armed comrades, making them more than a match for both infantry and cavalry.
Power Rating: 7+1 against cavalry
Western mercenary units:
Foreign Regiment:
Cost: 11,000
These units are more disciplined and homogeneous than their expatriate counterparts. Their wealth of experience and leadership from competent officers means that they are superior to the average line infantryman. In European courts it has become quite the fashion to maintain such prestigious regiments.
Power rating: 7
Ottoman mercenary units:
Mamlukes:
Cost: 18,000 ducats
The military caste of Egypt, the mamlukes have devoted their lives to honing their skills as melee cavalrymen. Their military history is a tapestry of valour against crusaders, Portugal and eventually the Ottomans, who imposed a state of vassalage upon them. Still, grudges may be set aside, for a price.
Power rating: 10
Eastern/Russian mercenary units:
Cossacks-
Cost: 18,000 ducats
Light cavalrymen from the Steppes of the Ukraine, the Cossacks have a fierce reputation. These horsemen, armed with both muskets and sabres, can execute the tasks of both Dragoons (save ambushes) and hussars with equal ability.
Power rating: 10
Naval Mercenary units (available to all coastal states)
Privateer:
Cost: 25,000 ducats
When war breaks out, nations might feel that they need to augment their forces with additional forces, particularly with a view to waging commercial warfare on their enemies. The privateer is an exemplary mercenary in this regard. They excel in guerre du course and allow the user to wage war against enemy shipping with a decree of anonymity. This also makes the privateer a tempting peacetime weapon, however, should the privateers be discovered, the victim has immediate cassus belli against the offender. The Privateer is a frigate sized ship, therefore don’t expect them to last long in fight against a battle fleet.
Power rating: 6
Abilities and attributes:
Nationless raiding
