Given that a significant amount of Leviathan takes place (in theory at least) outside of Europe, we have decided that it is time to introduce indigenous units to the mix. Indigenous units are forces that can only be raised if a state has a vassal or a colony in the colonial theatres corresponding with that of the unit’s catchment area. These forces are more expensive but often have their own unique advantages and save the player from having to constantly transport their European troops to these theatres. Furthermore, these forces are more resistant to the attritional effects of war away from Europe that would be suffered by European troops. This is particularly true of India.
North America
Native American Scouts
These forces have intimate knowledge of the land and have made irregular warfare their second nature (anyone who has watched Last of the Mohicans knows what I'm talking about). Therefore, these forces make for superior skirmishers and ambushers and have the ability to scout enemy movements but don't expect them to hold the line in the open against a European army....
Power rating: 4+3 ambush bonus
Cost: 4,000 ducats
Native American Cavalry
A far more mobile version of the Native American scout, these forces a wreak havoc on enemy infantry formations, preferring to attack from a distance than get in close and personal. However, if they are faced with serious cavalry opposition they will likely break.
Power rating: 6+3 ambush bonus
Cost: 10,000 ducats
India
Sepoy Line Infantry
Indian forces employed by trading companies. These troops are drilled and fight using the European method of warfare. They have a great advantage over their European counterparts in that they are resistant to the blistering heat and tropical diseases that would otherwise greatly affect the ability of Western forces to operate in the area.
Power rating: 6
Cost: 7,000 ducats
Sowar Cavalry
Indian cavalry employed by trading companies, these forces provide much needed support to sepoy infantry in battle. They can also carry out the scouting activities that dragoons carry out in European campaigns.
Power rating: 7
Cost: 10,000 ducats
Central Asia
Steppe Cavalry
Those empires that are expanding into Central Asia would be wise to establish relationships with the tribes there. Upon doing so, they will be able to seek out the services of tribes that spend most of their lives on horseback. These forces can ambush, scout and fight conventionally.
Power Rating: 9
Cost: 12,000 ducats
East Asia
Company Troops
European troops hired by trading companies. These forces can both fight and undertake occupation to a competent degree.
Power Rating: 6
Cost: 7,000 ducats
*About Africa and South America: Given the already widespread decimation and integration of indigenous populations into the empire of Spain and Portugal there are no native forces available for hire. In terms of Africa, we remain open to suggestions given that it does not seem that tribes were particularly interested in selling their martial services to European armies.
