Western military units:
The following units are available to those of the Western military culture. States with a Western military culture are: The Three Kingdoms, France, Spain, Portugal, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, The HRE (both German and Italian), Austria, The Papal States, Venice and Switzerland. Western armies tend to field superior infantry and solid artillery however tend to be weaker in the cavalry they field. Western armies tend to focus on the increasing power of the infantrymen and advances in artillery over the more traditional superiority of heavy cavalry. Pfft like that will catch on…
Infantry:
Militia:
Cost: 2,000 ducats
These are hardly the crème of the European martial crop. They are well suited to constabulary roles. Taking these units on campaign would be foolish and smack of desperation. That said, these units make competent irregular fighters, being well disposed towards ambushing.
Power Rating: 3+2 ambush bonus
Abilities and attributes:
Can ambush
Domestic occupation bonus
Line infantry:
Cost: 5,000 ducats

Power Rating: 6
Pike infantry:
Cost: 3,500 ducats
The pike man has reached the nadir of his utility by this period. Once they were the primary actor on the battlefield now they are vulnerable to artillery and concentrated musket fire. That said, they are cheap, quick to raise and devastating against any cavalryman idiotic enough to charge them head on…
Power Rating: 4+2 anti-cavalry bonus -1 against concentrated musket and artillery fire
Grenadiers:
Cost: 7,000 ducats
These troops form the elite of Western European Armies. Armed with both grenades for siege situations and flintlocks for use on the battlefield, these units are a hardened jack of both trades. The presence of such units at a siege may make an assault all the less deadly.
Abilities and attributes:
Siege assault bonus
Power rating: 7+1 in sieges
Engineers-
Cost: 8,000
The institutionalisation of engineers as formal regiments within armies is still yet to come. Still, the increasingly resiliant nature of fortifications requires the presence of specialists who know how to locate the weaknesses of such fortifications. As such, armies with the presence of engineers will be more efficient in besieging settlements, just don’t expect them to be a good shot with a musket…

Abilities and attributes:
Siege efficiency bonus

Cavalry
Yeomanry cavalry:
