Another year has ended. In 1687, Russia, smarting after losing influence over the Caucasus, decided to attack Sweden to open up a route on the Baltic. In response, Poland and the Ottomans decided to capitalise on the conflict to regain territories lost over the last century of Russian expansion. Realising their situation, the Russians baffled Christendom by retreating after successfully taking Ivangorod in Narva, scorching the earth behind them. In the South, the Ottomans are advancing, and after an incredibly bloody siege, wrestled control of Tsaritsyn from the Russian army. Seeking to capitalise on events in the East, The Holy Roman Emperor, Leopold I, decided to take back land he considered his, and successfully occupied Swedish Pomerania.
It is not all bad news, however, as peace seems to have triumphed in the Franco-Dutch war and an amicable settlement has been agreed. However, France has not removed its troops from the Spanish Netherlands. This is seen by most as a quasi-occupation and the Spanish court has indicated that if it continues it will be considered a hostile invasion.
In the Holy Roman Empire, following the uncovering of a major ring of corruption, many German states expelled their Jewry. This led to a brief financial crash which was averted after the Emperor backed a new Doge of Genoa in his election campaign. Following his victory, the Doge sent out financiers from Genoa to deal with the Empire's problems, resulting in the formation of an Imperial bank located in Genoa itself.
Word has reached Europe from India. A warhorde seems to be arriving as the Mughal Empire manages to forcefully annex most of Bijarat and Golkonda. The remains of these two Sultanates have been swept up by the Kingdoms of Mysore and Keladi. For European settlers, this surge in Mughal power is worrying, threatening their colonies. Though the division of the Southern Kingdoms in India will make colonialisation of the Southern Indian Continent a little easier.
Territorial changes:
England gains West Bay (Canada) and Stuarttown (Mississippi).
Denmark gains Chaul (India).
France gains the Cape of Good hope from the Dutch.
Austria has occupied Pomerania.
The Ottomans have occupied areas in the South of Russia.
The Ottomans gain Wadai, Bornu and Darfur.
