My dearest friend John George III, Elector of Saxony
Our two states face an ever more uncertain future ahead. Austria would like to propose an alliance between our two states so that we may alleviate this threat, and in doing so help bring greater regional stability to this area of 'Germany' - as well as the wider HRE. Austria wishes to see the sovereignty of its northern neighbour kept safe and secure for the foreseeable future. I, Leopold I, would be honoured if you signed this alliance with Austria, I wish to see the relations of our two states grow only deeper and stronger
Kindest regards,
Leopold I.

John George III is an honest man with a straight heart. He is dedicated to the preservation of the Empire despite being sidelined due to his Lutheran beliefs. He says he will answer the call when the Empire is under threat, as he has always strove to do, but cannot justify to his fellow Saxons engagement in aggressive campaigns at this time.
John George has decided to remain neutral for the time-being. A change in international circumstances could change his mind on this matter.

The Emperor would like to insist that the alliance he proposed was to be put in place to insure against future aggression against the Empire, and would not bind Saxony to fight by Austria's side in the current war.

John George, gives the matter great thought. On the one hand, he needs to please his subjects, on the other he does not wish to disappoint the Emperor.
He tentatively suggests that he could commit to a defensive pact with Austria, but posits two additional arrangements. The Emperor must work actively to promote toleration of Protestants in the Empire, he must also subsidise the Saxon war effort in the event that the defensive call to arms is made by Austria.
