Battle of Ivangorod
OOC: Both Pyotr and sirstromming have made their strategies clear to the admins. The following is a dramatisation.
IC: General Gordon was proud of his planning. His army was prepared to assault the Eastern fort of Ivangorod. Hermanni Linnus would have to wait for the time being.
The battle went according to the script, fire aimed at the bridge made it difficult for reinforcing armies to get from the other fort to Ivangorod and repeated howitzer barrages toppled part of the wall, killing some of the garrison that lined it. Shortly thereafter more of the wall began to crumble, and the infantry started to advance. The first problem quickly became evident. The siege tunnels created by the engineers began to flood drowning some of those inside, most made it out, however. The water table was too high for this to be an effective strategy and Gordon was forced to place his emphasis on the infantry advance.
The fort's cannons began to fire upon the approaching troops with minimal effect. Are they even aiming at us..?
Suddenly a massive blast shook the battlefield, two more smaller but equally devastating explosions followed. Gordon squinted his eyes, hoping to see through the smoke and dust that had been thrown into the air, before narrowly missing being hit be a flying rock. Slowly, the opaque air dissipated and Gordon was able to see the damage. The walls of the fort had suffered due to the shaken ground, similarly the bridge connecting the two forts, damaged by artillery barrages, crumbled, no longer able to take the strain. Gordon bent over to examine the stone that had nearly hit him, it was painted white on one side... he stood gobsmacked as he realised what had happened. In front of him several infantry regiments were heavily affected. Soldiers with missing limbs were trying to crawl back, over their fallen compatriots, to the Russian line. The blasts had also caused tunnel collapses, killing more of the engineers as they tried to evacuate, some parts of the battle field had formed sinkholes where the tunnels had previously been. They weren't aiming at us...
Shaken, but not broken, more line infantry begins to advance, a total of 17,000. Ahead of them, the rebel irregulars opted to take the risk of crossing the battlefield first to protect the more important units. Behind the line infantry, the lifeguards prepared to follow. It was a sight to behold, possibly the most grand Gordon had ever witnessed - almost 40,000 infantrymen preparing to assault the infamous walls of Ivangorod. Cannon fire continued. More men fell, more walls crumbled. Several Swedish galleys swung by the coast firing their respective salvos in a few passings. This took it's toll on the advancing infantry, however, the Russians prepared for such a strategy and two of the galleys grazed by artillery fire were forced to limp away before the others withdrew.
The irregulars crashed into the breach. Gunfire could be heard between the cannon shots, the fort was alive with the sound of death. Gordon bit his lip, waiting for the result. He had no idea how much time had passed, minutes? Hours? Time seemed to shrivel and warp around the General's tent. He could see fighting on the walls, his men had forced their way up the staircases, and were clearing the turrets. The fort's cannons slowly stopped firing, one by one. Then he saw it, the standard of the Naryshkin flying from the flag pole. Then an even grander sight, the Russian standard, draped over the walls, and another, and another. Gordon sighed a great sigh, and started smiling to himself. This was clearly a victory to be remembered through the ages.
