The army arrives in Turnhout in good order and high spirits in under two weeks.
The men and skilled civilian labour brought and locally hired begin the make-shift fortification of the town. Under the auspices of the engineers, a series of three rings of trenches and palisades begin construction concentrically around a substantial wooden raised redoubt several hundred yards north of the Steenweg op Merksplas. Upon this redoubt are mounted 50 field guns positioned in overwatch of the approach to the town and canal, facing north toward the Nieuwe Bossen and Dombergeheide but with good views in all directions. The spire of the church of Merksplassweg is within sight.
In the centre of the town the historic castle of the Dukes of Brabant begins to be renovated and improved as new trenches and palisades are added to its decayed outer defenses. Mounted atop the citadel's roofs and keep an additional battery of field guns and howitzers are positioned.
The army's contingent of Dragoons and Hussars patrol as far north as the Dutch border.
