Yesterday I suddenly thought "hang on, isn't 'kara' the Turkish word for black? Why would they call the Black Sea white (ak)?" and realised that I'd been making a repeated cockup. The Akdenız - the White Sea - is what the Ottomans called the Mediterranean, and the Black Sea was called the, well, Black Sea - or Kara denız.
Please see the bracketed English name as the correct one, as it always accompanies the Turkish. Henceforth, I shall correctly refer to the Black Sea as Karadenız (or more likely Karadeniz because I don't have a Turkish keyboard and I'm lazy).
