Pyotr watched as the regiments of line drilled in a live fire exercise. They were going through the movements and seemed to be missing most of their shots. Pyotr peered to see how quickly they were managing to reload, most of them were struggling to manage two rounds a minute.
"Not the brightest bunch your boys." Gordon chuckled as some poor infantryman dropped his musket.
"Well they are the peasantry. They are tough, but the intricacies of musket drill are somewhat foreign to them." Pyotr looked less than happy with the performance of his men.
"Well sir, if they are tough but simple, then we should play to their strengths." Gordon had stopped laughing. He didn't fancy being on the receiving end of Pyotrs club...
Pyotr got down from his horse and walked briskly over to the infantry. The Officer in charge called the order to cease fire, the regiment stood to attention and shuffled into neater ranks. The Officer forced a nervous smile and saluted the Tsar "Sir, the men are making marvellous improvements in their musket drill."
"Don't lie to me Colonel. I detest liars almost as much as I detest incompetence." Pyotr brushed past the now slightly irritated Colonel.
Pyotr snatched a musket and bayonet from one of the soldiers, he fixed the bayonet and held the weapon in the air "I always thought we ought to meet the invaders on the outer verge of just right and defence, and raise at once the black flag,no quarter to the violators of our homes and firesides! You have lived tough lives, hard lives! You are strong and will endure far more than some blue coated softie, or some boy buggering Turkish dog! They will fire faster than you, but you will charge! You will give them the bayonet, cold hard steel my boys! Put the fear of god in them! Run to almost point blank range, take their fire, deliver your own volley and charge, screaming like furies! This is how we will win the world!"
Pyotr threw the musket back to the soldier and marched off, looking back he yelled one last order to the Colonel "Drill them with the bayonet Colonel! Teach them to love the steel!"
Pyotr institutes a focus on bayonet drill and hand to hand combat within the line infantry regiments of the Russian army. He believes that this will play to the strengths of Russian soldiers and result in a devastating shock effect on enemy troops.
