Sad news was circulated today, as Doge Marcantonio Giustinian passed following a failed surgery. Some applaud his diplomatic and oratory skills, claiming his tight grasp of diplomacy and finance kept Venice afloat during a period of conflict with the Turks. Others curse him for his lack of activity and predisposition to parties and grand events.
Following a brief election period, the Doge's throne is passed to Francesco Morosini. He is from a long line of Doges and generals, with the Morosini family (according to their self-perpetuated legend) having fled to Venice following conflict with Attila, the Scourge of God. Unusually, for an Italian noble family, they seem to have carved out their reputation through martial prowess, rather than through financial acumen. Francesco is no different, having held the garrison of Candia in Crete against the Ottomans for 21 years, the longest siege in recorded history. He also won some decisive victories as an admiral, helping to restrict Ottoman control over the Mediterranean.
There was virtually no one opposed to his ascension to Doge, and many have high hopes for his leadership.

Francesco Morosini hopes that, in the wake of the tragedy of Marcantonio Giustinian's death, he may rule over a period of peace and prosperity for Venezia. This said, the new and most serene Doge does not intend to leave the defences of Venezia to pure chance. If any threat should manifest itself to the Republic, all should be assured that Francesco Morosini and his faithful feline companion - Signore Zampa - will swiftly exact punishment upon any foe. Furthermore, if any state should be so morbid as to take an opportunity at the expense of Venezia and default on any loan payments, know thus: The Iron Bank does not forgive, and we never forget.
